Miami enacted a law in 2017 requiring public artwork on new projects, and the Miami Parking Authority has submitted a proposal for an aviation-themed work on a new garage.
The Regatta Harbour garage is being built in Coconut Grove, near city hall and the historic Pan-Am seaplane base.
The parking authority is proposing to cover portions of the 2nd and 3rd floor with a metallic mesh, decorated with a 1903 seaplane. The mesh has a 50% transparency to allow for ventilation, and will be lit with LEDs at night.
Artist Will Hemsley V was commissioned to create the work.
Government Development Projects must spend 1.5% of their budget on public art. The MPA will spend $286,955.90 on the mesh art, which exceeds the requirement for the project by $21,221.70.
Miami’s Art in Public Places Board will review the proposal at a meeting on September 16.
